The Cremorne Point Project

A simple garden box with an unbelievable backdrop. The brief was to “provide a planting plan that complemented the view”.

Plants used

Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea sp.), Banksia (Banksia spinulosa ‘Candlelights’), Grasses included –Libertia paniculata, Lomandra ‘Tanika’, Poa ‘Suggan Buggan’ and Pennisetum alopecuroides (not P. cetaceum with which it’s sometimes confused!)

The garden box faced south west and was full of weeds and a couple of struggling Gardenias. It received late afternoon sun, strong winds and the clients were time poor.

It was decided to use Australian grasses weaving around a grass tree with low growing banksias at the front for textural interest. The movement of the grasses in the wind is very attractive and the dome shape of the grass tree reflects the curve of the Harbour Bridge.

A small sized mulch was also used to help with water retention, minimize weed establishment and help stabilize the soil temperature.
