I drew on the influences of Impressionism to create this beautiful garden. An understated side entrance to this gorgeous Federation house meant a move away from structured symmetry. On a subtle underlying structure of a relaxed, discreet cross axis, a play of light, quiet shadows and a hint of water travel with the visitor as they make there way from the road to the entrance.

A simple garden box with an unbelievable backdrop. The brief was to “provide a planting plan that complemented the view”.
The garden box faced south west and was full of weeds and a couple of struggling Gardenias. It received late afternoon sun, strong winds and the clients were time poor.

This garden was designed as if for a rooftop space in the inner city. The clients worked all day and wanted a nocturnal environment.
The landscape design was inspired by a dramatic scene from Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’. A Buddhist priest storms on stage denouncing Butterfly for changing her religion so she can marry an American naval officer. His proclamations are punctuated by the crash of a gong. It is a quiet reflection after these tumultuous events.

The brief was to design a garden that required “little maintenance, had colour, and was inviting to entertain - and get married in!”
The sight posed several challenges. It lacked privacy being surrounded by several medium density developments, was on a reasonable slope, had dry shade, hydrophobic soil with a pH of 6.0, was covered in weeds and the clients were time poor. The garden was also significantly lower than the house and seldom accessed.
It felt dry, lifeless, distant and unloved.

This garden had just finished being a building site. The brief was to “create a garden that made a statement and reflected the contemporary feel of the house”.
The garden was north facing and exposed to the wind. The soil was a loamy sand with a pH of 6.5 and drained well.
A very minimal approach was decided on.
